Mt Hood: Winter Moon, North Face

This is the fourth painting in my "Mount Hood Series." I've spent many days and nights backpacking the foothills surrounding Mt Hood during all seasons, including winter, to understand the moods of this mountain. In this painting, snow-mantled hemlocks and firs stand together, quietly guarding the great mountain, silently reflecting a cobalt blue winter sky. Up here, cross-country skiers and hikers can find the freedom and serenity of total quiet, a mystical companion for visitors to the Oregon Cascades.

Neskowin Coast

This painting is of a headland on the central Oregon coast near the tiny town of Neskowin. This kind of scene is a natural for a watercolorist, with a simple composition and natural, easy-going colors. It conjours many images along the Pacific Ocean beaches; and can take most of us on a quick trip back to a remembered favorite.

Deschutes River Canyon

The Deschutes River canyon in west central Oregon is home to a stunning array of migratory birds and high-desert plants, and the finest wild rainbow trout fishery in the northwest. The water is clear and clean, the wildlife abundant, and the power of the massive canyon walls is palpable. We boat it many times each year, fishing, cooking and camping along its banks, and never tire of its capacity to refresh our souls; which also makes it a great place to paint.

Deschutes Flight 2

As warm sunny days lengthen into spring, the canyon walls become infused with the yellows and greens of new plant growth. The trout become more active and birds are in flight. It is a time for returning, and a time for rebirth. After a few days of camping in solitude amid this burst of renewal, the green hues can become a feeling. This simple monochromatic piece is one of those feelings.
